An all-optical trap for a gram-scale mirror.

We report on a stable optical trap suitable for a macroscopic mirror, wherein the dynamics of the mirror are fully dominated by radiation pressure. The technique employs two frequency-offset laser fields to simultaneously create a stiff optical restoring force and a viscous optical damping force. We show how these forces may be used to optically trap a free mass without introducing thermal nois...

A single hollow-beam optical trap for cold atoms

We present an optical trap for atoms which we have developed for precision spectroscopy measurements. Cold atoms are captured in a dark region of space inside a blue-detuned hollow laser beam formed by an axicon. We analyse the light potential in a ray optics picture and experimentally demonstrate trapping of laser-cooled metastable xenon atoms.

A Single-beam, Ponderomotive-optical Trap for Energetic Free Electrons

60 LLE Review, Volume 70 Traditionally, there have been many advantages to using laser beams with Gaussian spatial profiles in the study of high-field atomic physics. High peak intensities are achieved due to their focusability, they are easily generated in most laser systems, and their focal region can be described analytically. However, free electrons interacting with such a field are rapidly...

Non-harmonic potential of a single beam optical trap.

Since the invention of optical traps based on a single laser beam, the potential experienced by a trapped specimen has been assumed harmonic, in the central part of the trap. It has remained unknown to what extent the harmonic region persists and what occurs beyond. By employing a new method, we have forced the trapped object to extreme positions, significantly further than previously achieved ...

Optical actuation of a macroscopic mechanical oscillator

An intensity-modulated HeNe-laser beam was utilized to optically actuate the mechanical resonance of a macroscopic torsional silicon oscillator (f 0 = 67 700 Hz, Q = 42 100 at p = 1 mbar and T = 300 K). Both radiation pressure and photothermal effects may cause optical actuation of a mechanical device. Both excitation effects were studied. In actuation through radiation pressure, the actuating ...
